This week the state of Alabama was in the news. Republicans here have chosen the 'real' conservative candidate who among other things said that there is no climate change — just 'political science'. And what can be even a little doubt: he promised to oust Obama from the White House in the fall.
Until relatively recently in this state a marriage between people with different skin color was simply prohibited. Interracial couples ended up in jail. Well, non-white part of the couple to be exact. A statute banning such unGodly marriages was finally struck down only in 2000 by 59% to 41%, with a vast majority of whites voting in a referendum against allowing people to marry as they wish.
4 years later in another referendum state population decided to keep intact segregation-era provision, requiring separate schools for "white and coloured children".
In 1963 the then Alabama governor, George Wallace, at the steps of the state capitol made a solemn pledge: "In the name of the greatest people that ever trod this earth, I draw the line in the dust and toss the gauntlet before the feet of tyranny and I say: Segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation for ever."
His soul is still alive and well. Recent polls found that 60% of state inhabitants do not believe that any evolution took place on this planet.
I am not sure about our planet but this noble state is truly managed to avoid all devil's temptations of the last century.
Alabama, my love...
